How Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) Works

What the Heck Is VoIP and Why Do I Want It for My Phone System?

One of the benefits of cloud-based telephone systems is that if you have internet service, you have telephone service. However, the actual mechanics of using a Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) phone system remain a mystery for most. So, how does VoIP work, exactly?

A VoIP system converts your voice into digital data, which is then transferred across the Internet. When it arrives, the signal is then converted back into audio data before the call is connected to a traditional landline.

All that is required is a broadband (high-speed) internet connection, such as DSL, cable modem, or a T1 line. Some providers will use exclusive equipment that must be leased from the provider (like a modem from your cable company), while others utilize a software-based system that must be installed on your computer. There are even instances of a specialized adapter, usually used to connect VoIP services to an existing traditional telephone service. Regardless of what you use, VoIP has become the new norm.

While VoIP possesses many benefits over traditional telco services, there are some downsides, the main one being the availability of power—your broadband internet must be active to receive and place calls. This means that missed or dropped calls can occur when your internet service is unsteady, unless you have an internet failover device to help mitigate these issues. Also, not all VoIP services are plugged into the 911 system or traditional directory assistance services.
